By Phil Egan – Swiss-Seal

Here we talk about artificial/fake grass. When we purchase and have artificial/fake grass installed, we often forget that to keep it in the best condition possible we must look after the artificial/fake grass on a weekly, monthly, and ongoing basis. Here at Swiss-Seal, we will look at ways of keeping your artificial/fake grass like new. There are several treatments that you will need to follow. The treatments go as follows.

  • Ongoing Cleaning of the artificial/fake grass – We would try to keep away from the home-made remedies of cleaning the artificial/fake grass with the likes of water and vinegar which if it works at all will leave a pungent smell that a lot of people is off-putting or water and washing powder /tabs, again simply does not really clean the artificial/fake grass. First, on a weekly or monthly basis rake or soft brush any obvious debris that is visible on the surface so that they do not cause issues with entanglement or drain blocking.

Using our SWISS-SEAL ARTIFICIAL GRASS CLEANER will kill bacteria and prevent anything from growing on the turf, whilst leaving your grass smelling great. The product is child and pet-friendly so if you stick to the application details your artificial/fake grass will look fantastic and last for many years to come.

Some artificial/fake grass ranges may need re-sanding. This will depend on the pile height of your grass, and the positioning of the blades. If your blades are looking a little flat, simply brush them back and top them up with a layer of infill.

  • Maintenance – Accidents can happen but being proactive will prevent any lasting damage. Be sure to repair any seams, tears, and holes as soon as you spot them. This will keep your garden looking great and prolong the lifespan of your artificial/fake grass. To get rid of a liquid stain in your grass, use a damp cloth or paper towel and blot the stain directly, make sure not to rub the grass. If the stain is a little harder to remove, mix a tablespoon of water with a pint of detergent and soak your cloth in it. Then blot the stain using the same method. If there are any accidents with toffees, chewing gum or sweets then remove it by using a sharp knife scraping upwards with the grass blades.
  • Artificial/fake grass and pet problems – As a guideline we would suggest that you clean your artificial/fake grass at least once a month as mentioned above removing debris and leaves and cleaning with our SWISS-SEAL ARTIFICAIL GRASS CLEANER to keep it looking and smelling great. Depending on the number of pets you have and their grass usage, clean the artificial/fake grass more regular to avoid urine smells building up. A lot of issues can be avoided if the artificial/fake grass has been fitted properly and drainage has been applied correctly. If your pets moult be aware that this can cause blockages to the artificial/fake grass breather holes so make sure you rake or brush regularly.
  • Weed issues with artificial/fake grass – Weeds are a pain and very frustrating. To keep these from growing the first thing that should have been done would be the installation of a weed membrane when the artificial/fake grass was fitted. This would form a barrier to stop the penetration of the weeds.

Treating weeds in artificial/fake grass – Autumn can bring on the issues of weeds, moss, and algae to the artificial/fake or fake grass. To remove these issues, you would do the following. Power wash the artificial/fake/fake grass. This will remove all but very stubborn stains, use our SWISS-SEAL ARTIFICIAL GRASS CLEANER to treat the grassed area, the solution is environmentally friendly and works extremely well at treating all these issues. When this is done remove any excess with a soft broom, then rinse with the power wash, and if necessary, when dry replace any lost sand.
